Well it’s that time of year when we are as far away from the hot summer nights as we are close to the cold, dark winter ones. That midpoint between light summer eating and the hearty comfort food needed to keep us warm in the winter.
Autumn is a beautiful time of year but it can pose some dinner time dilemmas. That’s because the weather does have such a big impact on the appeal of different foods. For example sitting down to eat a rich hearty casserole on a hot sunny day just wouldn’t seem right and likewise salad can lose some of its appeal on a dark cold evening.
To make life easier there are some foods that taste great whatever the season; chilli con carne is one, spaghetti bolognese is another to tuck into no matter what the weather is doing outside. Then there are those dishes that can be great at any time of year depending on what they are served with. This pie is a great example. Serve it with root vegetables and rich gravy for a perfect winter meal. But so easy to change it up if served with some steamed green vegetables, which would make it far better suited to a warm sunny day.
If you have a favourite meal for autumn I would love to hear from you.
